How to manually update McAfee VirusScan versions 4 and 5

VirusScan version 5 offers a nice feature that allows you to update with a simple click of a button.

Updates are no longer available for version 3. If you are still running version 3, you need to purchase a current version. Click here to purchase a current version of Virus Protection and PC Maintenance Tools

You might find it convenient to Print this page first. To do a manual update Click on this link: McAfee Update

It will take you to McAfee's Update page (add the page to Bookmarks, or Add to Favorites for future reference).

Scroll down to the section "To update your DAT files, select the corresponding VirusScan product below".

Click on VirusScan 4.x, 5.x and Dr Solomon's AntiVirus 8. In a few seconds, you will be taken to a page with the download on it. Scroll down a little and click the button that says "Download".

In a few seconds, a window will pop up asking you where you want to save the update. You should NOTE THE FOLDER where it is saved! You will need to go to this folder, after the download is complete, to click on the download and install it. Many people find it easiest to save the download in a folder named Mcafee. If one does not exist, you can easily create it. Once you have told it where to save the file, click OK

The download takes anywhere from a few seconds for a high speed connection to 5 - 10 minutes for slower "dial-up" ones. You can use your computer for other tasks while downloading, though if you have a slow connection it is better not to use the internet (i.e.surf the net ) at the same time as this will slow both down.

Once the download is complete, go to the folder where you saved it and Click (or DoubleClick if required) on the icon. That should launch the update. A wizard will pop up to install the update for you. You will have to click Next a few times as it opens, closes, uncompresses, etc. At the end you will have to click Finish. It may prompt you to Reboot (restart your computer). Click OK.

Congratulations! You are done!

F.A.Q. and Tips

-There's several of these updates in my folder! Which one do I use? The updates (called dats), are numbered sequentially each week. If this week's update is 4168xdat.exe, then last week's was 4167xdat.exe, and next week's is 4169xdat.exe. If you do not delete them, your downloads will continue to accumulate in the folder where you save them. This does no harm but may be a little confusing. The most recent one is the one with the highest number, and that is the one you will use.

-Whoops! I did my download but now I can't find it! Maybe I forgot where I saved it! There are a few ways you can figure out where it is. Most systems are set up to automatically save downloaded files to C:\My Download Files. It may be in there. Click on My Computer to open it, then click on C:, then click on the folder My Download Files to open it. Is it in there? If so, click on it to start the installation of your update.

Another approach is to use Find to find it. Click on Start>Find>Files or Folders. Where it says Named, type in the name of this weeks update (ie: 4168xdat.exe). Be sure Include subfolders is checked. Click Find Now. It will scan until it finds it for you. Once the file is found, you can launch it by clicking on the icon.

If you are not sure what the number of the update is, you can still use Find. Use a Wildcard instead of the number. An asterisk (star symbol, *, shift 8) is used for wildcards in searches. In this case we would type *xdat.exe where it says Named. Using the wildcard will give you all the updates that are still stored on your computer so be sure to choose the latest one!
